In general, all urologists are trained to deal with problems like benign prostatic disease, urinary tract stones, erectile dysfunction and benign scrotal disease. Most urologists, especially in the developed world, develop a special interest in specific sub-sections or certain technologies.
Is Urology the same as nephrology?Urology is a surgical specialty, whilst nephrology deals with medical conditions related to the kidney. Nephrologists are physicians, whilst urologists are surgeons. Typically, urologists and nephrologists work closely as several conditions require shared care – for example, in chronic kidney disease (CKD), where the nephrologist manages the ‘medical’ side of the problem and once it reaches end-stage, kidney transplant is performed by the urologist.
